Productivity Gain Using AI: I Built My Portfolio Website in Under 5 Hours with an LLM

I recently created a few posts on LinkedIn and noticed some limitations- —adding multiple images, image placement, formatting text and so on. It made me realize that having my own dedicated website would be the right way to contribute meaningfully, without these constraints.

The challenge, however, was that it had been a long time since I last worked with HTML and CSS. Like many leaders managing limited resources, I faced the same trade-offs: investing significant time to do it myself (lead time and opportunity cost) or allocating a budget to hire help. This is exactly the type of constraint organizations deal with when trying to operate efficiently.

So, I decided to give an LLM a try to see if it could help me generate the code and instructions needed to build the website.

To my surprise, the LLM was very helpful! It provided the HTML and CSS code and configuration steps for setting up a static website using Route53, S3, and CloudFront. The guidance was promising, although the human factor was still critical—reviewing and correcting the code and finalizing the overall setup. Needless to say, effective prompting was key to helping the LLM understand my requirements.

The outcome? Here is the first iteration of the site (MVP 1). It’s clean, functional, and I was able to build it in less than 5 hours. I've already migrated some of my recent LinkedIn posts into structured articles. The site will give me more flexibility to create interactive visuals and deeper content. I’ll continue using LinkedIn for text-based posts as well.

This experience is a great example of realizing productivity gains by leveraging AI, but without leaving the strategic human factor behind.
